Farewell to the Queen of the Skies!

On the 22nd of July the Aviation Society held a plane spotting event at Sydney Airport to bid farewell to Qantas’ last Boeing 747-400 (VH-OEJ). The meeting point was the rooftop of the P6 Carpark which gave us a great vantage point of runway 34L. Just after 2pm, VH-OEJ peered from the Qantas hangars making her way to be loaded and at 3:07pm she began taxiing around Sydney Airport for the final time. She received a water salute and made sure to keep all plane spotters happy by making her way past Shep’s Mound, the Old Control Tower and finally us at P6. At 3:26pm she lined up on runway 16R and moments later we all watched with great sadness as the final Queen of the Skies took off. We waited eagerly for her to come back around so we could get one last look and at 3:37pm she flew directly above us, making her way to the Harbour.

The Queen of the Skies will be dearly missed by all Aviation Enthusiasts, including all of us here at AvSoc!
